Dealing with Disappointment

Dealing with Disappointment

Every time I think I have this whole blogging thing down, life gets to me and I go MIA for a few of weeks. Seriously, I can't believe it's been nearly 3 weeks since I've written a blog post. I have so many post ideas that I cannot wait to pick up right where I left off!

Last week was spring break at Georgetown and I had plans to go to NYC with my BCF (best college friend), Anjali. Apparently, God had other plans for us and after 8 hours of traveling, we ended up back in D.C. due to the nor'easter winds. After looking forward to a mini vacation all week, a wasted day and foiled plans left me extremely disappointed. But I remembered a quote from Essentialism, "saying yes to any opportunity by definition requires saying no to several others," and thought about what I said no to when I made plans to go to New York. In the midst of the traveling chaos, at 10pm I sent an email asking if it was too late to go to a brunch the next morning for a church that I'm considering joining (life update coming soon!) and 12 hours later I met some amazing people and ate the best vegan pancakes I've had in a while.

Anjali and I spent Saturday afternoon exploring D.C.; taking a million (actually 73) pictures at the Hirshhorn Museum, ice skating (not at Rockefeller Center), and eating one of my favorite meals at Busboys and Poets. As many of you know, I'm a planner and spontaneity rarely makes its way into my life. However, this unexpected day turned into one of the best I've had at Georgetown. When things don't go your way, it can be easy to dwell on your disappointment. So many times, my plans have fallen through for reasons outside of my control and until last weekend, I never turned my misadventures into memorable moments.

A disappoint doesn't have to mean a bad memory or a missed opportunity, its fully within your power to decide what happens next. While I won't soon forget the 8 hours I spent cramped on a bus when I think of this spring break I'll remember stuffing my face with vegan mac and cheese and trying not to fall on the ice. Though I'm still a bit miffed that I didn't get to enjoy a girl's weekend in the city, I'm so appreciative of the time I spent with Anjali, and that was the whole point of our trip. On Sunday morning, I ended up on a bus again, but thankfully this time I reached my destination despite my eventful trip. I spent some quality and much needed time with the family and also worked out the details for a super exciting trip later this year (updates coming soon, seriously)!

When dealing with disappointment or rejection, I try my best to see the positives because it doesn't benefit anyone to wallow in sadness. Moving on and letting go is the best thing you can do for yourself and with the right attitude, you never know where you'll end up. I hope this post showed you how to rethink and rework your next disappointment. Leave a comment letting me know how you move on and/or let go when things don't go your way. Stay tuned, xx Lauren.
